Google Acquisition of FeedBurner Could Pay Off for Users Too

by kris on May 24th, 2007

Late last night we learned that Google has indeed purchased RSS company for a cool $100 million. According to , who confirmed the news, the deal is all cash and will keep the founders of the company at the helm for at least several years.  The deal is not complete essentially waiting on paperwork but is a done deal and will be official in 2-3 weeks.

In its most basic sense Feedburner is a service that makes your blog easier to subscribe to and also has advanced features as well allowing you to tweak your output to satisfy your individual needs. They also feature podcasting support as well and although I haven’t used the service, I have heard good things about it. The service has commercial partners as well including Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today.

One of the most intriguing parts of this deal is of course FeedBurner’s already established Feedburner Ad Network, FAN for short. The advertising program offers CPM advertising on qualifying feeds and offers some of the most targeted online advertising. So where does Google come in? Keep reading to find out.Google has been beta testing (since early 2005) AdSense for Feeds. The program serves up pay-per-click advertising on feeds with more than 100 subscribers. Sound like the perfect balance? It just may be.

One of the sole reasons purchased FeedBurner was for their large group of dedicated users but also for their ad program. Giving Google more ads to serve feeds on as well as a CPM product to compliment their already established PPC advertising.

Integration between the products is still likely a ways off (I am thinking late summer but time will tell) considering the deal is not even finalized yet but when it eventually happens a lot of Feedburner users should find themselves presented with the option to join the advertising programs as well as additional features Google may eventually add.
