Who gets Gawker?
Time for a ramble and this time I’ve chosen Gawker.
Is it just me or does Gawker make absolutely no sense to anyone but those that live in Manhattan? I’ve often skimmed through posts when its success has been outlined on other blogs, but it’s all Japanese to me. Its Reputation is no doubt outstanding and I’m sure the traffic levels Gawker receive brings in a tidy pay packet, but what I still don’t understand is how it gained its popularity by targeting such a small niche. Does every New Yorker read this blog or something?
I’m half tempted to start up a blog that will discuss gossip and news right here in Sydney, Australia. Though it’s potential is quite low because.. well lets face it, Sydney is no New York in terms of HOT gossip .. but who’s with me?

Thanks for saying that. I think that the big deal about Gawker is the New York press that it gets. Everyone is someone just because they live in New York. I feel the same way when I try to read “The New Yorker.”

I actually love Gawker. Don’t know why really. But I adore New York as well so maybe it’s just an easy way to live in NY vicariously through Gawker.
I have also flirted with the idea of an Australian Gossip site and even have the domain aussiegossip.com but the key with a genuine gossip site where you are breaking stories and not just rehashing other people’s leftovers is you have to be ridiculously connected to have people tip you off and speak off the record. That’s why Gawker is successful the writers know everyone in the NY media scene. Also Crikey really fills the media/business/political gossip void here in Oz though much less glamorously than Gawker.
