ME TIME

by admin on June 7th, 2006

As a uni student, I get to enjoy *sarcasm detected* public transport to and from university. It’s only in the past few months that I have realised that while public transport is slow and incovienent, I actually enjoy it. I enjoy it because it gives me some ME TIME.

What is ME TIME you say?

It’s time that allows ME to think about stuff other than work, assignment deadlines or other stressful events. I find my best blogging comes from this ME TIME.

One method I’ve used recently is to blog on the train, and the foremost reason why I think this works is because of the lack of distractions. Whilst at home or work I have the Internet to distract me and let’s be honest; the Internet is a HUGE distraction. You don’t have to write on the train like in my example, but try going somewhere without Internet. On the bus, to the park, on a ferry, in a cafe – pick somewhere familiar that lacks distractions. Somewhere that lacks the Internet.

You’ll find the creative juices flowing within no time :)

I am living proof. I was reading your post and I got distracted by something you said. I had to go check it before I could continue. I made a vow I would finish your post. Stop to reflect. Write this comment. Thank you for you post. Turn off all unnecessary distractions and do my 3-D world work today. Thank you for sharing your experience. It jolted my reality — again. :)

It’s definitely true — having direct Internet access can allow for quick and easy research (adding links to a post, etc.), but truth be told, those things can be added later when you return to a connection. Meanwhile, writing “unplugged” allows for much better flow.

I thought I’d never say I missed public transportation, but now that I have a highway drive commute to work instead of a trip on Washington D.C.’s Metro system, I do miss the opportunity to read, or write, or just stare out the window of the train and let my mind work on the problem of the day. It’s hard to do that at 80 mph on the way to Cedar Rapids!
