Yahoo Publisher Network Rev vs. Google Adsense Rev

by Paul on August 22nd, 2005

Well I have had Yahoo’s ads up on this site for over a week now and I am able to get a better idea of how they compare to Google’s. Although I am still getting a lot of PSAs I can report that I am moving all my sites over to Yahoo’s Publisher Network some time this week because they pay more. A hell of a lot more.

This site (which is going through a major overhaul in the upcoming weeks) gets very little traffic. Maybe 100-200 pageviews a day so Adsense money would obviously be pretty low so I never expected Yahoo to perform any better. How do they compare? Not even close. Let’s look at some numbers to see how my ten days of Yahoo stack up against some of the months of Adsense.

  • August: 1112% of Google
  • July-August: 189% of Google
  • June-August: 80% of Google
  • May-August: 56% of Google

What this means is that I have seen a 1112% increase in revenues for this month using Yahoo over this month’s Google. 189% just for the ten days of Yahoo in comparison to the whole month of July and part of August combined for Google!!!!

Now this is just a small sample so I can’t say everyone will get these numbers, but I can say that it shows that Google was taking a massive chunk of the percentage of our Adsense. I would guess over 75%. So what does this mean for the web? More money for everyone because competition will lower the percentage that Google takes away.

I hate to show those kinds of numbers because I know everyone starts to develop wild fantasies, but I know many of you are not in the beta program so I felt that I needed to share. Life is good.

To bad that YPN Beta is available only to U.S. residents. :-(

Just curious, but could it be that way because people are curious about those ads and therefore clicking them more? What about the CPC the 2 sites are getting, are they pretty comparable or does Yahoo outdo Google?

Is it possible that Yahoo is giving away a BIG % of the click NOW, only to slowly ramp it down to google’s range after it is no longer beta and their evangelist beta-users have done all their marketing for them ?

Or will it force google to up the % of the click that they pay out ?

I’m guessing 60-40 on the latter, as our payouts have risen over the last 15 days to levels we have never seen before.

Mike, it will be a combination of the two. And will always continue to be. Yahoo is going to see from Google that they can take a higher percetage. Google will give out more, Yahoo will give out more, Google will take some away, Yahoo will take some away, etc.

That’s basic economics right there. As long as there is a better choice out there people will go for it; and the competition will see that and do everything in their power to make themselves the better choice once again.

Nevertheless for publishers…it is win frickin win baby!

I agree that the numbers probably won’t remain that, but you have to remember that Yahoo is already a profitable company and doesn’t need the Publisher’s network while Google’s business model is about 80% from its ads.

Yahoo has the ability to give a significant portion of the money to the publishers and stay profitable without any worries.

Well I have the ads on Whitespace now and they are much more contextual than the ones shown here.

    Scrivs & Ryan,

    I believe you’re both right.

Scrivs, good point about Yahoo already having profit, I had not thought about that.

I can’t wait for YPN to open its service to non-US publishers. The AdSense vs YPN competition can only be good for us publishers.

Yeah that’s a bummer. AdSense is really flaking out for me, showing no ads at all or ads unrelated to my content. So I want to see what YPN can do, but I’ll have to wait.

Yahoo percent seems fair. I’ll use yahoo after beta testing for USA only. I’m excited!

It remains to be seen which countries’ residents Yahoo will allow to use the service?

I am English but live in Turkey. Google Adwords is available for me to use here, but a number of affiliate programs aren’t.
