Turnkey Sites
As a regular reader of the sitepoint selling forum, I often see “Turnkey” sites for sale. In all honestly, I can’t stand them. Before I get in to why, let me explain what Turnkey sites are.
Turnkey websites are in a sense, an automated website that’s primary aim is to sell a product or display content - without the need for human presence.
It’s almost like this begging robot, you could put it in the middle of a street and earn money whilst doing sweet jack all.
While turnkey sites may work for some people, I don’t like the concept. There’s no passion, no webmasterly love. Just boring, template driven websites selling other peoples products and content.
Turnkey sites are for the lazy.
So my advice, be wary of buying turnkey sites. Any 12 year old equipped with a free turnkey script is able to create a fully functional site using other people’s content, to which they will try and flog on sitepoint 24 hours later. Usually for some stupid amount.

I always want to scratch the ‘n’ out of that word whenever I see it - in the same way that I always want to add an ‘i’ to a “TO LET” sign whenever I see one of those, too.
Not that it adds much to your post, though.

Turnkey sites are just like a drug. You get a quick hit, but the rush is quickly gone and you go around scrapping for more.

True that. But then again, they’re a great way to experiment in terms of link structure, SERP manipulation, and design.
They’re also a great way to make a quick buck off of effectively no work.

Turnkey sites like say Scrivs’s AWS sites are an easy revenue stream that capitalizes on existing resources (page rank, traffic, brand) for little effort. I view them the same as newspaper publishers who rely upon classified advertising for the majority of revenue to finance the quality journalism in the rest of the paper.
