Bet Fest Revenue Plan
Earlier this week I launched my latest site, Bet Fest. This is a poker blog that is written by some of the big names in the design community and should do pretty well traffic wise in the upcoming months if the content is kept fresh due to the poker craze occuring across the world.
As with most of my sites the plans to generate money do not differentiate much.
Adsense
The great thing about Adsense is that you can quickly get it setup on any site and see the results almost immediately. If it’s performing well you know and if it’s not then you still know. All the Adsense ads on the site are Poker ads and I have yet to see a PSA popup so it looks like that aspect will be somewhat successful if the traffic can follow it.
Amazon Store
Yep, another Amazon store, but this one isn’t as filled as the others (or complete at the time of this writing). It will include poker equipment along with Poker books and other casino type books.
I will go through the Commission Junction and LinkShare networks to see if there are any merchants that would also fit in with the store and begin to market them as well. With most of my stores I kind of put them up and forget about them, but starting with this one I will be more active in how it is run.
Affiliate Stuff
On the homepage you will see a banner for PartyPoker.com. They have an affiliate program (review coming up next week) that I figured I would test out on Bet Fest. I created my own banner to fit in with the site as I wasn’t in the mood to post up those crazy, flashy banners that they provide.
E-Books
The authors will compile their knowledge together and write some e-books that will sell on the site. This is another topic that I will write more about shortly.
Text Ads
Eventually once the traffic has reached a certain limit I will sell textads on the site as well.
Other than that, these are the only methods I have in place to generate money…well there is one more, but I am waiting to see if my application is accepted…:-)

Thats the great thing about getting a name for yourself, like you and the ones who are going to write poker tips, because basically, anything you guys touch (in a weird analogy way) turns to gold. Meaning, they could make a blog about pet rocks and essentially, because of who they are, they are almost guaranteed a good amount of traffic to that site.

I wish life were that easy. I do start off faster than most, but things die down if the content sucks. Gotta keep it up and get linked by other sites. People seem to think I grow links from trees or that I don’t need anymore links. Silly rabbits.

I see that more and more of your sites are being run and written by multiple authors. Out of curiosity, how do you operate like that? Are they paid? Do they have some sort of article quota to fill? If they are paid, what is it based on?

As of now I let them have their own google ads for their entries. So they control how much they can make. The more entries, the more pageviews, the more money. In marketing speak they get 100% of the revenue their entries produce or something like that.
The latest members on FG have quotas that they must meet, but the Bet Fest people don’t. New ones probably will in the future though.
When I become more established and my sites grow much larger than they are now I could probably put some people on salary ala Calacanis and Denton, but until then I play the nice guy route and let them have the money.

Just curious, how do you arrange it so the google ads are matched up to different people depending on the entry?

Just a simple PHP if statement saying that if author = JC (for example) then you his Google ID. That’s all that matters is the ID.
