Google Adsense

by Paul on August 11th, 2004

Google Adsense is a program from Google that helps websites generate money (hopefully) by placing contextual ads on the website’s pages. Placing the code in your pages is as simple as cut and pasting.

Advantages

  • Easy to use. It’s easy to use as mentioned above. Google takes all the work and frustration out of finding the right type of ads for your site.
  • Flexibility. Google allows you to change the look of the websites so that you can quickly have them fit in or standout on your pages.
  • Multiple Sizes. Google offers multiple ad sizes that help to give you a strong choice of what type of ads you wish to use on your site. You can have a banner spanning the top of your site, a skyscraper ad along the side, or a block ad in the content.
  • Administration Backend. The backend to help you administer your ads is high quality. Even though stats are not tracked in real-time you should see your results within hours. Looking at past results along with which channels perform the best prove to be invaluable.
  • Channels. Channels allow you to place separate code numbers within your ads so that you can differentiate between them. This helps to show you which pages and what type of ads are performing best for you.
  • Unobtrusive. Unlike the flashing banner ads that we have become so accustomed to, Google’s adsense are text links (with an option to use graphical static ads) that do no hinder your reader from concentrating on the content of your site.

Disadvantages

  • No Word Tracking. Although you can keep track of what pages were being clicked by using channels, you are unable to find out what search terms are bringing in the most money for you. Sure you could use a number of tools to find the highest paying keywords and try to create pages that produce those high paying pages, but in the end you are left in the dark.
  • Fluctuating Prices. One day you are making $50.00 and the next day you are down to $5.00. Google determines how much to pay you based on how much the advertisers are paying for those keywords. This fluctuates daily so don’t be surprised to see huge fluctuations in your daily totals.
